Naturopathic medicine is based on the belief that the human body has the innate ability to heal. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) teach their patients to use diet, exercise and lifestyle changes to enhance their bodies’ ability to prevent disease and heal its self. ND’s view the patient as a whole person.
Naturopathic physicians base their practice on six principles.
- First, do no harm. Provide the most effective health care available with the least risk to patients.
- Recognize, respect and promote the self -healing power of nature inherent in each individual.
- Identify and remove the causes of illness (the root) and not eliminate or suppress symptoms.
- Educate and encourage self-responsibility for health.
- Consider all individual health factors and influences when treating each person.
Naturopathic physicians work in private practices, hospitals, clinics and community health centers. ND’s treat all medical conditions and can treat individuals and families. The most commonly treated ailments are allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, adrenal fatigue, fertility problems, menopause and cancer. They can perform minor surgeries like stitching superficial wounds but cannot perform major surgeries. ND’s are trained to utilize prescription drugs but the main emphasis is on the body’s ability to heal on it’s own.
Your first visit could last up to two hours. ND’s take time with each patient to ask questions and understand each individual’s health goals. They will take a health history and ask about your diet, stress level, sleeping, nutrition and other areas of your life that could be impacting your health. They may perform an examination or diagnostic test. ND’s take a lot of time to understand the root of the health issue or concern and will work with you to set up the best health care strategy including referral to other health care practitioners if necessary.
